What constitutes “bad links”?

A bad backlink is a link that comes from a not-so trusted website. Since the Penguin algorithm change in 2012, Google has been cracking down on bad links. ... As a result, Penguin was launched. Instead of improving their rankings, this update actually penalized webpages that were associated with these bad links.

The following constitute bad links,

  • The spammy links from blogs
  • The links from websites non-indexed in Google
  • Paid links
  • The links from low Page Rank and Low traffic
  • The links from websites that are irrelevant to your sites
  • The links from link exchanges
  • A link from the same anchor texts coming from various websites

A bad link is simply one that violates Google's guidelines. Consequently, it can lead to Google penalties. You should look out for signals when building links, no matter where the links are coming from. Link farms, paid links, link wheels and other black hat link-building techniques can get you into trouble.
