What is mobile first indexing?

Mobile-first indexing means Google will predominantly use the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. Historically, the indexprimarily used the desktop version of a page's content when evaluating the relevance of a page to a user's query.

Mobile-first indexing is simply how Google crawls and indexes the web. Instead of looking at the desktop version of the page, Google looks at the mobile version of the page. In more simple terms, Google is crawling and indexing your web page based on how it renders on a mobile phone versus a desktop computer.

It means that from now on, Google will base what it places in the index based on the mobile version of your site, whereas they used to index the desktop version of your site first. This switch is made because more and more searches come from a mobile device and to give those users a better experience, Google decided that it was time to prioritize mobile results.

Google will predominantly use the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking and here index primarily would use the desktop version of a page's content while evaluating the relevance of a page to a user's query.

That's why called mobile first indexing.
