What is the difference between SMM and SMO?

The clear difference between the two is SMO refers to on-page modifications on your website whereas SMM refers to activities taking place outside your website (on some other channels). In brief, SMO can be taken as a way to encourage SMM activities by visitors of your website.

Social Media Marketing : The final acronym we will tackle in this post is SMM. Social Media Marketing is about promoting a business via social media channels and includes conversing with clients on their chosen social networks. It can also include “Paid Social Search” or social paid advertising. Paid social search is much like SEM but adds behavioral targeting to the equation. A majority of this advertising is based on a PPC model, meaning advertisers only pay when a user clicks on the advertisement.

Social Media Optimization means developing profiles on social media networks about your business/website such that members of that network can view and share your profile/page with others.

For example, you have a blog, the best way to promote it is to create a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn profile and share relevant information with people that may be interested in your work.

This can work as a gateway to acquire a large audience and generate traffic to your website without spending a penny.

SEO- search engine optimization; following some of the Google rules in order to increase the chances of the Google search engine listing your site near the beginning of a list for particular keyword searches.

SMM– social media marketing; in addition to the SMO, you guessed it, you pay to have an ad on social media. This is how the Facebook ads show up on your page.
