There are few things that need to add up.

On-page: Unique content, preferably content that users will read and not leave the page right away (bounce rate, time spent on site comparing to first 10 pages, user interaction- comments, sharing)

Get an eye on your first 10 competitors and analyse them inside out.

See their content: how many words, what keyword density, link structure, etc.

For on-page optimization see link assist- website auditor, they provide pretty good report with step by step guide. You can order this kind of report for $5 on fiverr, instead of paying an 'seo company' $100 - $200 ;)

Of-page:

Follow their backlinks and see what type of backlinks are used. You will replicate this type of backlinks, as google will see this natural, considering the niche. Add up better quality of links and number whenever possible.
